Toronto is a city known for its vast array of sushi restaurants. As a native of the town, I can honestly say that the hundreds of sushi bars slowly start to merge into one conglomerate restaurant. Eventually, each sushi restaurant becomes just like the next. I, a huge fan of the Japanese cuisine, was losing interest in sushi fare...that is, until I found Sushi on Bloor.
Even before I ventured inside, I knew Sushi on Bloor was different from the others. Despite being situated right next to another sushi joint (which was frequently less than crowded), Sushi on Bloor is always host to a line that reaches just outside the front door. I popped in for a quick lunch one afternoon when the line was shorter than usual (only to find it moves quite quickly) and sat down to enjoy the best sushi for the best price.
Since that first trip, I’ve returned two more times. After each meal, I’ve been able to say that their sushi really is superb. Their salmon is tender and flavourful, their tempura crisp and fresh, their sushi rolls succulent, and their service friendly and quick. The servers keep you happily filled with complimentary green tea or water, and are quick to drop a free bowl of miso soup on your table.
The in-house experience is a pleasurable one, but how does the takeout fare do? Well, I tried out their takeout menu: it’s quick and easy, and they offer a 10% discount for all orders. Although you may miss out on green tea and refills, you do save some money and still enjoy great Japanese fare.
Sushi on Bloor has, not surprisingly, won dozens of awards (the plaques of which grace their interior) and for good reason. The prices are more than reasonable, with lunches starting at just over five dollars, and dinners at just over seven. Daily lunch specials are especially great value if you’re looking to save some cash. The sushi bar is one of, if not the best, of the city, and certainly deserves a visit, should you be hankering for some Japanese food in the Annex.
Sushi on Bloor is located in the heart of the Annex at 515 Bloor Street, right by Bathurst Subway Station.
The restaurant is open from noon until 10PM on Sunday, until 10:45 PM on Mondays through Thursdays, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
