Casa Loma by Erik Gustafsson
A few days ago, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said that Casa Loma should be sold to save tax payers’ money. The image of the legendary Casa Loma becoming a real estate listing immediately stirred huge controversy online.
As a Toronto Realtor, I can’t give you an unbiased opinion. Therefore, I will leave the opinion to the readers. Here’s a collection of the most interesting comments from the web. You’re more than welcome to add your own comments. You can also vote in our Casa Loma Poll on Facebook.
Getting over the hurdle
“I have very fond memories of my children and now grandchildren visiting Casa Loma and marvelling at its various attributes. Why does the city have to sell it? Can it not make it an attraction? If it goes into limbo, a precious piece of history will be lost and with it a good income stream, if the city knows how to nurture it. Very few Canadian attractions are as user-friendly as Toronto’s castle.” Princessandthep on CBC
“I am no Ford fan but why not sell it with strict rules. As long as it looks good from the outside who care who is in the rooms?” John Frodo on The Globe
“GOOD !!! Why should the Toronto Tax payer keep on paying for the piece of junk !!?? Let the Fed buy it or some private investors ! It’s just a big empty house, turn it into a Conference centre, a private club or sell it to U of T or make it an annex of the ROM ! The possibilities are endless for a building of that size and prestige ! But enough of the Gravy train !! – My Property taxes went up 36 % in the last 2 years and if I go visit that old piece of junk, I still have to pay for my entry ticket !! SELL IT !! " NorthernFog69 on CBC
“Why not convert Casa Loma into a “five star” casino. We really need a casino in Toronto, and it would provide a steady stream of revenue to the city’s coffers." Spadinajack on CBC
“Wow, I can’t wait until Casa Loblaws opens. Have some respect for your heritage properties, Toronto!” Commentitis on The Globe

I agree with John Frodo, sell it with strict conditions.
