The Harbourfront Centre has always been a great spot to spend time in during the summer, whether you feel like taking a walk beside Lake Ontario or enjoying a picnic on the grassy knolls. This year, Harbourfront presents Hot Spot, a series of arts and cultural events running from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, giving Torontonians another reason to visit the waterfront.

Dancing on the Pier Banner

Every Thursday, the Dancing on the Pier program teaches you how to dance for free, from salsa, hip-hop, to Bollywood and Egyptian belly dance. After learning a few moves, hit the dancefloor by the waterfront with DJs spinning hot beats and professional bands and dancers providing a night of high-energy entertainment.

The Harbourfront also presents Street Stage, the place to check out Toronto’s best street performers. Every weekend, enjoy jugglers, mimes, and musicians at multiple locations across the Harbourfront complex, all for free.

On Canada Day, you had the chance to celebrate with your fellow Canadians at the waterfront with a free concert featuring Ontario alternative pop artist Esthero, an exciting singer-songwriter who effortlessly fuses rock, jazz, lounge, and hip-hop styles together in her unique and sensual tracks. Also, there was an O Canada singing competition, featuring finalists selected through Facebook.

You can catch Free Flicks outdoors on Tuesday evenings from July to August. The six selected films explore life in different cities around the world; works include Lost in Translation, Paris Je T’aime, and Amal.


For music fans who like to stay one step ahead of the mainstream, be sure to catch the finalists of the Soundclash Music Award every Friday thoughout July. A $10,000 cash prize awaits the winning artist/band of this independent artists showcase, with the winner determined by the judging panel and by you, the audience.

If you like multidisciplinary art, you surely didn’t miss On the Pulse from July 2 to 3. A weekend spectacle of technology, audience participation and interconnectivity, with events such as workshops on cumbia, Maori music and dance, and hoop dancing, an improv performance featuring top Toronto comics in The Carnegie Hall Show, and a real-life Where’s Waldo game.

Finally, a range of global cultural festivals will take place through the month of July at Harbourfront. Experience song, dance, and theatre from regions all over the globe in events such as Corazon de Mexico, Colores de Columbia, Tirgan Iranian Festival, Calypso Stars Showcase, and Island Soul.
