While it is very possible to go trick-or-treating in housing areas around the city (I recommend Rosedale, Bayview Village, the Beaches and, of course, any large building in your own neighbourhood), there are many alternatives or additions to trick-or-treating to consider. Every year, special locations around the city hold events to commemorate Halloween.

Boo at the Zoo: On October 23, 24, 30, and 31, from 10 am to 4 pm, the Toronto Zoo boasts a “‘fall-bulous’ array” of Halloween entertainment. There are animal meet-and-greets, storytelling, performances, and an animal costume parade children can participate in. As a bonus, up to two kids 12 and under can get in for free if accompanied by an adult. For more information about “Boo at the Zoo”, visit the Toronto Zoo website.

Casa Loma’s Fall Events: The beautiful and historic Casa Loma Estate hosts four Halloween-themed events. First, “Dracula - A Love Story” is a play based on Bram Stoker’s novel in which 100% of the proceeds go to preserving Casa Loma. “Casa Loma Estate Ghost Tracking” is for adults and children (although discretion is advised) and features two of the hosts from YTV’s “Ghost Trackers”, Michelle Desrochers and Partick Cross, conducting spirit investigations on Casa Loma’s usually closed Upper Stables. Another spirit hunting event, “Real Ghosts - Real Castle”, also run by Michelle Desrochers, features ghost story presentations in various parts of Casa Loma. Finally, on Halloween day, Casa Loma hosts its annual “Pumpkin Carving Contest” for children only. All participants must bring an adult to help them carve, and everyone gets a spectacular loot bag full of goodies just for participating. Howling Hootenany at Black Creek Pioneer Village: This event features Victorian ghost photos, a haunted maze, a giant apple slingshot, a creepy creature show with animals such as snakes and spiders, and various delicious Halloween treats served in Black Creek’s historic buildings.
